Hailed as one of mankind’s oldest dreams and myths, the one of the lost paradise, Atlantis – Santorini wows with its sweeping views, magic sunsets, friendly culture and boasts extraordinary crystal clear blue waters… .

I flew in from Paris to Santorini via Athens. The landing late in the night is a once in a lifetime memory (…you have to convince yourself you will not be accidentally ditched into the water 😉 ). The view is outstanding with blue-white houses on top of fiery red dramatic cliffs….

We landed at Thira airport and with the taxi it was just a 20 min ride to the Costa Marina Villas – an amazing hotel and great value for money located in the capital Fira…. just a 3 minute walk from all the restaurants and hot spots. The receptionist Maria is world class – she armed us with all the information we needed and off we went! She reinforced my travel experience so far that it is hard to beat true Greek hospitality..

If however you are going for a honeymoon there are exclusive hotels all around the island where you face the volcano. Ofcourse expect to pay upto 4 figures for this – but I didn’t find it this time necessary as there are many ways to have the full view of the volcano without having to break the budget…

One of those ways and one of my personal highlights was the hidden gem Palia Kameni Cocktail bar – we pretty much got the best seats as well as an unobstructed view  Sea View Level table L4. You have to book upto 3-4 weeks before you arrive. Prices are fair considering that Santorini is a pricey island – book asap.

The next morning we decided to hike from Fira Town to Oia. I would like to state it was absolutely wonderful but very hot! I suggest to take a bus to Oia and hike down to Fira Town instead to enjoy more of the view! A definite must and worth the look surrounded by this spectacular scenery…

For another great view – walk down (or you can take a donkey) the 588 old Karavolades stairs. Once you are down you can take a cable car back up. The views here too are one of a kind…

After all that hiking we decided to go to the fish spa Fish Spa Kangal (the “kissing fish” are amazing). The feeling is extremely funny at first but quite relaxing too. We took the 30 minute package and enjoyed it greatly…

Now it was time for the beach… If you do not have a moped or car the buses run often… We decided to head to Kamari –  a beautiful beach with black sand (an effect thanks to a volcano – comforting huh 🙂 ). This beach is idyllic and lies under the impressive mountain of Mesa Vouno. This black beauty has been awarded the exclusive eco-label Blue Flag status. Kamari offers a wide range of cafes, bars, restaurants, shops and supermarkets, as well as a lively nightlife. The beach is organised, with sun beds, umbrellas, water sports and diving. We personally went for a spontaneous jet skiing ride and had a ton of fun.

For all you history and archaelogy lovers do not forget to visit Akrotiri which is one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean. The first habitation at the site dates from the Late Neolithic times (from 4th millennium BC).

Santorini also boasts a wide range of delicious wine. Yamas! 😉 Head to Artemis Karamolegos Winery for amazing wine (and delicious food!!). A small wine tour can be organised too…

Last but not least our absolute highlight the one-of-a-kind Ocean Voyager 5-Hour Catamaran Sunset Cruise.

Ocean Voyager 5 Hour Catamaran Sunset Cruise Santorini Greece

We were picked up at our hotel in the afternoon and were transferred to our catamaran for our 5 hour cruise. We sailed around the island stopping from time to time to swim and snorkel around Red and White Beach. We had a delicious dinner of traditional Greek cuisine including a salad, grilled pork and wine.

We also swam around the Caldera. It is a funny feeling when you swim close because due to the sulphur of the volcano the water all of a sudden turns warm. Never ever bring a white bikini as this will turn yellow especially in the mud bath 😉 … We sailed just in time for the sunset to view from Oia … No words. Just perfection. Just as amazing as seeing the magic sunset from Oia Town only absolutely unobstructed…

I would definitely recommend visiting this island. Try to avoid the high season as it can be super crowded and go late June, early July or early September instead. καλη διασκεδαση!
